More Word on the Street
With "Get Right Within," I wanted to push the energy of this series into a more urgent, almost frantic territory. Like the other pieces in this collection, it’s built over the skeletal remains of Lauryn Hill’s "Doo Wop (That Thing)" lyrics, but here, the message feels like a direct command rather than a question. By layering my hand-painted typography over the mechanical "HOW YOU GONNA WIN" print, I’m exploring that pivotal moment where we stop looking for external validation and realize that the only victory that matters is the one we achieve over our own internal chaos.
The visual language of this piece is intentionally loud and unapologetic. I chose a searing, blood-red backdrop to create an immediate sense of heat and pressure, forcing the blue and grey-toned lettering to fight for its space on the canvas. The "Get Right Within!" script is outlined in vibrant yellow and orange, giving it a neon-like glow that feels like it’s vibrating against the surface. The loose, dripping quality of the paint and the gestural loops of the lettering are meant to mirror the messy, non-linear process of self-refinement—it’s not a clean path, but it’s a necessary one.
As the artist, I see this work as the energetic peak of the "Doo Wop" series. While "You Ain't Right Within" served as an observation, this piece is the call to action. I left the original black typography visible beneath my own marks to show that while the world’s questions about "winning" are always there, our personal growth has the power to overwrite them. It’s a celebration of the grit required to look inward and the vibrant, chaotic beauty that comes from finally deciding to align your spirit with your actions.
