With "You Ain't Right Within," I wanted to create a visual confrontation that forces the viewer to reconcile the exterior image with their internal compass. This piece is a central part of my ongoing series built directly over the printed lyrics of Lauryn Hill’s "Doo Wop (That Thing)," a song that has always struck me for its raw, unfiltered honesty regarding self-respect and integrity. By layering my own hand-painted typography over the mechanical, block-printed words "HOW YOU GONNA WIN," I’m trying to visualize the internal dialogue we all have—the struggle between how we present ourselves to the world and the truth of who we are when no one is watching.

Technically, I leaned into a high-contrast, urban aesthetic, using a sky-blue field to push against earthy, mossy greens and clay-like ochres. The primary text is rendered in a deep navy, outlined with a searing neon orange that makes the words vibrate against the background. I chose a "connect-the-dots" style for the lettering to suggest that finding one's internal "rightness" is a process of mapping out fragmented pieces of ourselves. The grit of the underlying print, visible through the translucent washes of paint, serves as a reminder that our foundations—the "lyrics" of our lives—are always there, even when we try to paint over them with something new.

For me, this artwork is a stern but loving wake-up call. The phrase "You Ain't Right Within" isn't meant to be an insult; it’s an observation of the disconnect that happens when we chase external victories while our spirit is in disarray. By leaving the question mark from the original lyric visible in the bottom right corner, I’m inviting the viewer to answer that question for themselves. It’s a piece about the architecture of character, stripping away the noise of the "win" to see if the structure underneath is actually sound.
