Other Works

This wonderfully textured piece is a striking representation of a face that captures a profound moment of internal conflict. Created in 1994 and standing at a significant scale of 59 inches by 42 inches, the work utilizes a heavy application of medium to create a visceral, tactile surface. One half of the visage is partially obscured or shrouded, a visual manifestation of a personal chaos where the desire for understanding met an inability to truly see. The composition effectively splits the subject between a hauntingly clear presence and a turbulent, sweeping motion of reds and pinks that suggest a state of emotional upheaval.
The artistic environment surrounding the creation of this piece was one of intense collaboration and creative energy. Working alongside talented artists like Rossana Pinero Weksler, Carol Kruize, Rozalyn Spano and Their Peraza provided a rich studio atmosphere where ideas were constantly exchanged. This collective spirit encouraged a deep dive into experimentation with various techniques and materials, allowing for the raw and expressive style seen in the heavy brushwork and scraped textures of the face. The synergy of the group allowed each artist to push the boundaries of their individual styles while contributing to a shared sense of growth.
Invaluable guidance from mentors Marilyn Gottlieb Roberts and Amy Cappellazzo helped shape the direction of these young careers during such a formative period. Their advice provided the necessary framework to translate raw emotion and chaotic personal experiences into a cohesive and powerful visual language. The combination of expert mentorship and the freedom to experiment resulted in a fantastic environment that fostered the creation of deeply personal works like this one. It remains a testament to a specific time and place where the search for identity and the embrace of creative chaos intersected on the canvas.
