"OranguDon" is a cornerstone of my new series that reimagines the trajectory of popular culture and human history by removing our species from the equation and allowing the animal kingdom to evolve into our most iconic roles. With this piece, I wanted to channel the gritty atmosphere of the prohibition era, specifically envisioning a powerful primate as a rising figure in a 1920s criminal underworld. The character is portrayed with a heavy, deliberate dignity reminiscent of a young Robert De Niro, capturing that specific moment in a godfathers journey where success and authority begin to solidify. By dressing an orangutan in a sharp, tailored suit and placing him in this high stakes historical context, I am exploring how power and ambition might manifest in a world governed by different primal instincts.

To bring this alternate history to life, I utilized a rich and moody palette that evokes the smoke filled rooms of a hidden speakeasy. The orangutans face is the emotional anchor of the work, rendered with stippled textures and deep shadows to emphasize a gaze that is both calculating and weary. I applied thick, gestural layers of paint to the suit to give it a tangible, heavy quality that contrasts with the more chaotic, splattered energy of the background. The interplay of deep teals and warm oranges suggests a world of hidden dangers and golden opportunities, mirroring the volatile nature of the era. Through this fusion of animal nature and vintage cinematic tropes, I hope to invite the viewer into a reality that feels both strangely familiar and entirely new.
