Imagining Them
My latest portrait, titled "L.Y.B.L." is a thought-provoking, multimedia exploration that operates as a satirical critique of the modern wellness and beauty industries. Boldly emblazoned across the top is the acronym "LYBL"—standing for "Live Your Best Life"—accompanied by a subtle, handwritten "BUT...". The piece cleverly splits its focus right down the center, juxtaposing raw, textured artistic rendering with the cold, clinical language of standard self-care checklists, making it a standout entry in my body of work.
The left side of "L.Y.B.L." anchors the composition with a stylized, close-up portrait of a subject undergoing a classic spa treatment. Rendered with dense, expressive stippling and intense line work, the figure wears a detailed, speckled cucumber slice over their eye. This organic imagery is framed by a dramatic background of wavy, fiery red and yellow brushstrokes that inject a raw, restless energy into the frame, directly contrasting the superficial calmness usually associated with a spa environment.
In stark contrast, the right side of the canvas mimics an informational diagram or a textbook graphic, pointing out physical imperfections with blunt, handwritten remedies. Arrows cut across the textured surface to call out specific daily regimens: "8 hours of sleep help with mental clarity," "cucumber helps with the dark circles under the eyes," "water 2.7 liters will help cracked lips," and "skin cream for dry and wrinkled skin." By pairing these clinical instructions directly with the vulnerable human form, the piece challenges the heavy societal pressures and commercialized expectations of looking and feeling flawless.
