More Into the Wild
With "August Sunflower" I wanted to step away from the typical, bright optimism usually associated with summer blooms and instead lean into something a bit more introspective. Sunflowers are so often painted at their peak, standing tall under a blazing sun, but I found myself drawn to the quiet beauty of their transition. By capturing the heavy, downward droop of the flower head, I aimed to evoke a sense of bowing to time, turning a simple botanical subject into a reflection on resilience and the natural cycles we all move through.
In creating this piece, I wanted the background to carry as much weight as the subject itself, enveloping the sunflower in a textured, fiery atmosphere of deep brick reds and burnt oranges that hint at the approach of autumn. I deliberately contrasted that warmth with stark, heavy black linework and deep shadows to anchor the stem, allowing the remaining golden-yellow petals and muted, sage-green leaves to pop with a fading brilliance. For me, this painting is about holding onto light and warmth even as the seasons change and things begin to fade.
