Wilting Sunflower
Wilting Sunflower
Acrylic and Marker on Paper
9” x 12”
2018

When I created "Wilting Sunflower" back in the fall of 2018, I wanted to explore a side of this subject that I don't normally touch upon. If you look at Wilting Sunflower, you can see how this piece stands out from my usual work; while I normally paint bright, vivid sunflowers, for this piece I intentionally leaned into a duller, more neutral color palette. The process itself was a unique blend of mediums, serving as both a digital artwork based on the original concept and a physical painting where I layered my signature, watercolor-like acrylic paint splashes directly over a detailed hand drawing done in Sharpie marker.

There is a quiet, melancholic beauty in capturing a flower as it begins to yield to the changing seasons, and this experimentation with tone and texture allowed me to capture that exact transition. It remains a piece close to my heart, especially knowing its journey after leaving my studio. I ultimately donated "Wilting Sunflower," along with two other pieces from my collection, to the City of Hialeah Adult Centers, where I hope its muted warmth and intricate linework continue to bring a sense of comfort and reflection to the community.
