More Into the Wild
My latest painting, "The Bear In The Cabin" has a deeply unsettling and personal origin story. The piece was entirely inspired by a nightmare my cousin had, in which he dreamed I was trapped inside a remote cabin and killed by a bear. To capture the sheer panic and grim finality of that narrative, I wanted the canvas to feel alive with a destructive energy. I gave the entire piece the same intense, fiery glow you'd expect to see lighting up the screen at the absolute end of a horror movie.
In executing this vision, I chose to bring the bear's face into an intimate, overwhelming close-up, forcing the viewer to confront the threat directly. I layered deep, burning crimsons, blazing oranges, and heavy blacks to simulate the heat and chaos of a cabin consumed by fire, contrasting the chaotic background against the intricate, dark textures of the bear's fur. The piercing, amber-glowing eyes are meant to anchor the composition, holding a terrifying and unblinking gaze. For me, this painting stands as a visceral manifestation of a nightmare, turning a chilling family premonition into a burning visual reality.
