My latest portrait, titled "Elise" comes with a deeply personal layer of irony and musical nostalgia. The artwork was gifted to my ex-wife, who made several persistent attempts over the years to get me to listen to The Cure. In true, stubborn fashion, I resisted at the time, only to finally open up to their music decades later and long after our divorce—making this piece both a thoughtful gift and a lighthearted, artistic nod to her original, taste in music.
Layered across the upper left corner of the canvas is handwritten script spelling out the poignant lyrics to The Cure’s classic track "A Letter to Elise." Phrases like "Oh Elise it doesn't matter what you say..." cascade down the background in soft purple-blue ink, weaving narrative poetry directly into the composition. The lyrics echo the brooding, reflective tone of the image, turning a long-overdue musical discovery into a visual soundscape about memory, timing, and shared history.
Visually, the piece is anchored by Robert Smith’s intense, tilted gaze and cool, icy-blue complexion, contrasted against a deep midnight backdrop. Detailed stippling and cross-hatching define the delicate contours of his face and resting hand, while the dark red lips provide a sharp, classic focal point. His signature tousled, raven hair sweeps across his forehead in bold graphic strokes, completing a moody, alternative portrait that celebrates how great music always finds us eventually—even if it takes a few decades.
