My latest portrait, titled "Fight Erica" holds a deeply personal place in my ongoing muse series. Together with its abstract sister piece, "Hearing Damaged Erica," this portrait pays tribute to my unmet muse, wonderful text buddy, and loyal fan. Born from an ongoing digital connection and a shared love for great music, the artwork captures the magnetic energy of an artistic relationship built across distance through constant text conversations and creative inspiration.
A defining feature of this composition is the inclusion of handwritten lyrics from The Cure's song "Fight"—a favorite track that holds special meaning. Words like "Sometimes there's nothing to feel," "Sometimes there's no way to run away," and the echoing rally cry "fight, fight, fight" cascade around her silhouette in dark script. This emotional text overlay transforms the background into a visual soundscape, surrounding her likeness with the brooding, resilient spirit of post-punk music.
Visually, the piece bridges bold graphic portraiture with vibrant, expressive details. Her direct, contemplative gaze shines through a pair of eye-catching tortoiseshell glasses accented with bright teal and orange patches, while her deep red lips and dark hair create a striking contrast against her pale complexion. Framed by a textured yellow-green gel plate background and dynamic black brushstrokes, "Fight Erica" stands as a powerful celebration of a cherished muse and the music that connects us.
