My abstract mixed media piece, "Doldrums," navigates the emotional landscape of stagnation and quietude. The horizontal composition, defined by its rich teal and deep purple washes, evokes the vast, static horizons of a becalmed sea. I wanted to capture the texture of time and waiting, reflected in the varied layers of paint and the worn, almost distressed quality of the canvas. This piece invites viewers to linger in that liminal space where progress seems momentarily suspended.
The central band of raw, magenta-pink is the emotional core of the work, representing the intense, pent-up energy that exists even in periods of stillness. Contrast is key in "Doldrums," with a stark swath of dry-brushed white tearing through the upper register, contrasting sharply with the deep blues. This visual tension suggests the occasional intrusion of clarity or the possibility of movement, even when surrounded by inertia. The darker blue sections anchors the composition, adding a sense of weight and depth to the emotional register.
"Doldrums" is an invitation to find beauty and contemplation in moments of listlessness. It is an exploration of the colors and textures of stillness.
