Down To The Bones
As part of the collection "The Inside Joke: Down To The Bones," "Vigilant Unrest" (or "Where The Adoration Used To Live") directly advances the journey that began with last year's well-received exhibition, "The Inside Joke: The Bare Bones of Narcissism." This year's gallery expands its scope far beyond narcissism to explore other dark, complex corners of the human condition and psyche. With this striking painting, the focus zeroes in on paranoia—the relentless state of hyper-vigilance and fear that traps a mind in constant tension.
In this stark composition, a skeletal figure wearing a headwrap and short-sleeved shirt leans out from the shadows, pressing its bone fingers against horizontal blinds to peer out into a stark, vivid yellow light. The high-contrast palette and angular shadows visually convey the claustrophobic feeling of being perpetually watched, suspicious, or unsafe. The slatted blind acts as both a protective shield and a self-imposed cage, capturing the exhausting compulsion to search the unseen world for hidden threats.
By applying signature skeletal iconography to the psychological turmoil of paranoia, the artwork strips away superficial pretense to reveal the raw vulnerability of a guarded mind. It stands as an evocative, deeply compelling contribution to the gallery, holding up an honest mirror to the invisible barriers and hyper-alertness so many carry in silence.
