Flamingo King
Flamingo King
Acrylic on Watercolor Paper (Gel Plate)
5” x 7”
2025

“Flamingo King” is a 5" x 7" acrylic painting on watercolor paper, created using a gel plate technique as part of my ongoing participation in the #MailArtMovement. This global, artist-to-artist exchange has its roots in the 1950s and flourished through pioneers like Ray Johnson and the Fluxus movement. As a form of postal art, mail art celebrates the intimacy of shared creativity across borders. In my own practice, I use this format to share stories and symbols from my hometown, giving others a visual glimpse into the culture and character of where I’m from.

For “Flamingo King,” I chose the flamingo—a proud and playful symbol of my beloved hometown of Hialeah—as the central figure. Decked in stately jewels and wearing a king’s crown, this flamboyant bird is a tribute to the vibrant energy, pride, and flair that define our local identity. With festive colors and a royal touch, the piece adds a layer of humor and elegance to a familiar icon. Sent through the mail, it carries not just paint and paper, but spirit, history, and a personal connection to place.
