Fly Pelican Fly
Fly Pelican Fly
Acrylic on Watercolor Paper (Gel Plate)
5” x 7”
2025

My latest piece is titled "Fly Pelican Fly," a 5 x 7 inch acrylic painting on cardstock created using the Gel Plate transfer technique. This work continues my dedication to the mail art movement, with each piece I send telling a part of the South Florida story. I pulled this image from one of my own photographs of a brown pelican taken during a visit to Everglades City. After the gel press, I painted in the rich detail of its plumage, highlighting the natural beauty of this iconic coastal bird. The brown pelican, Pelecanus occidentalis, is one of three pelican species found in the Americas and one of only two that fish by diving straight into the water.

This piece, like much of my mail art, is about spreading the essence of South Florida far beyond its borders. Whether through wildlife, culture, or those unforgettable Florida headlines, my goal is to share our region's voice through visual storytelling. The title "Fly Pelican Fly" also pays homage to one of the most memorable scenes from Scarface, a film forever tied to Miami's identity. With this combination of nature and pop culture, the painting becomes both a tribute and a time capsule of the region I call home.
