Mail Art South Florida
My latest artwork, "Gator Eye", is a 5" x 7" mixed media piece on watercolor paper, made using gel plate techniques and created as part of my ongoing journey with the #MailArtMovement. This initiative gives me a chance to send out pieces that celebrate the uniqueness of my home—its wild beauty, rich natural landscapes, and the creatures that live among us. For this piece, I drew inspiration from a close-up photo I took of an American alligator’s head peeking just above the water, its eye cutting through the stillness with quiet intensity. It’s a perspective many in Florida recognize, and one that still strikes awe, no matter how familiar.
South Florida’s Everglades are unmatched in their raw, swampy majesty, and gators—affectionately dubbed “swamp puppies” by locals—are one of its most iconic residents. While they might seem menacing, they’re generally uninterested in humans, and encounters from a respectful distance are unforgettable. In this piece, I wanted to capture that exact feeling: the moment your gaze meets theirs, and you realize you’re looking into something prehistoric, powerful, and uniquely Floridian. It’s a tribute to our delicate coexistence with the natural world—and a reminder of what makes this corner of the planet so irreplaceable.
