Mail Art South Florida
Santera is a painting I created as part of my continued involvement in the mail art movement. Through this global exchange of art, I have been producing small, intimate works that reflect the animals, nature, culture, and people of South Florida. Each piece serves as both a personal expression and a cultural document, capturing the essence of my surroundings. These paintings are meant to travel, to connect with others across distances, and to carry with them a piece of the region’s spirit.
For this particular work, I chose to paint a Santera. A santera is a female practitioner of Santería, a spiritual and religious tradition with deep roots in Afro-Caribbean culture and a strong presence in South Florida. This painting honors her presence and quiet strength, portraying her as both mystical and grounded. Through color, texture, and form, I aimed to convey her deep connection to ancestral wisdom, nature, and ritual. In sending this image through the mail, I hope it sparks curiosity, understanding, and appreciation for the rich cultural layers that shape my community.
