Abstract
Birthday Cake on Steroids was a piece done in the early 2000’s. Often times when I’m working on a painting I’ll lay out several books and papers to use every bit of paint so none goes to waste. Sometimes these turn into the backgrounds for other works and sometimes they turn into paintings and artworks in and of themselves. Such was the case with this one.
The bright and vivid colors always gave me a good feeling when looking at this one and the strong red stroked always reminded me of candles. This always reminded me a kids birthday party and cake. Even the blue smudge on the lower right hand side reminds me of our Hispanic family tradition of taking a bit of the frosting and rubbing it on the birthday persons nose.
This piece was gifted to my wife years ago when we were still friends and it still hangs in her office til this day. As fate would have it, my wife loves birthday so this is one of my artworks that found the perfect home.
