Wilting Sunflower
Wilting Sunflower
Acrylic and Marker and Cardstock
9” x 12”
2018

Wilting Sunflower was created in the fall of 2018 and holds a unique place in my body of work. Unlike my usual approach to sunflower paintings—typically full of bold, vivid colors and vibrant energy—this piece leans into a more subdued, introspective mood. I chose a palette of dull and neutral tones to evoke a sense of quiet fading, capturing the fragile beauty of a sunflower near the end of its bloom. This contrast makes Wilting Sunflower stand out among my other sunflower pieces, both visually and emotionally.

The artwork itself exists in two forms: a digital version based on the original drawing, and a physical painting layered directly over that hand-drawn piece. I used my signature watercolor-like acrylic splashes to add texture and movement over a detailed Sharpie line drawing of the sunflower. The result is a delicate balance between structure and spontaneity, intentional design and expressive freedom.

This piece was one of three works I donated to the City of Hialeah Adult Centers. It felt meaningful to give back to the community through art, and I’m honored that Wilting Sunflower found a home in a place dedicated to care, reflection, and connection.
