Abstract
My latest collage piece, Hooray, measures 5" x 8" and stands as a joyful tribute to both my children and the spirit of creative reuse. It’s one half of a two-part series, completed alongside its companion piece, Peanuts. The materials I used are rooted in personal connection—recycled cardboard from a Sprite box, which is my daughter’s favorite soda, and character cut-outs from my son’s Charlie Brown coloring book. These familiar, everyday items became the foundation of an artwork that blends nostalgia, imagination, and a deep sense of familial love.
The composition of Hooray plays with depth and texture, layering materials between and over the Sprite box cardboard to create small “windows” in which Peanuts characters gaze out. These windows invite viewers to peer into a child’s world—bright, hopeful, and full of simplicity. A cut-out that reads “Hooray” sits boldly at the forefront, treated with bubble wrap to give it a playful, tactile texture that pops against a mostly gold-toned background. It’s a celebration not just of childhood, but also of sustainability and artistic resourcefulness, demonstrating how art can emerge from the overlooked or discarded.
Both Hooray and Peanuts were placed in our neighborhood Little Library as free giveaways—small acts of creative generosity meant to inspire community members to engage with art, reading, and the values of upcycling. It’s a project rooted in sharing, teaching my children that what we create can also be a gift. This piece is more than just a collage; it’s a memory, a lesson, and a celebration wrapped into one.
