Into the Wild
"El Gallo," a mixed media artwork I created in 2009, captures the vibrant energy of my upbringing in Hialeah. Measuring 9" x 12" on canvas paper, the piece is a blend of rich, watered-down acrylics in red, yellow, purple, and blue. These colors layer over one another, creating a lively, abstract representation of a rooster's head. The loose, fluid style of the paint is contrasted by the sharp, defined lines of the rooster, drawn over the chaotic background with sharpies, giving the piece a dynamic interplay between chaos and order.
Roosters and chickens are more than just subjects in "El Gallo"; they are symbols of my roots. Growing up in Hialeah, it wasn't uncommon to see these birds strutting around the busy city streets, a vivid reminder of our Cuban culture intertwined with the rural traditions brought to America. This artwork is not just a depiction of a rooster but a reflection of the cultural fusion that defined my childhood and continues to influence my art.
