The Affair
Mixed Media (Acrylic, Collage) on Unstretched Canvas
20.5” x 33.5”
2000

The Affair emerged in the late 1990s to early 2000s, a period when the artist was deeply engaged with questions of trust, vulnerability, and the shifting terrain of human relationships. Constructed through collage and paint, the composition interweaves clipped photographs: a couple entwined in betrayal, a shadowed male figure lingering at the margins, and a solitary woman in tears. These overlapping perspectives create a fragmented narrative, underscoring the multiplicity of experiences bound up in the act of infidelity.

Set against this figurative core is an abstract ground rendered in layered blues—drips, strokes, and splatters of pigment that mirror the chaos and turbulence of fractured intimacy. The palette evokes melancholy and solitude, while the painterly textures embody the instability of emotional life itself. Part confession, part observation, The Affair captures the raw complexity of human connection, exposing the fragility of trust and the unpredictable entanglement of desire and loss. The work, formally titled and dated retrospectively in 2023, remains a striking testament to the artist’s early exploration of personal narrative through the language of mixed media.
