What The Fuck Is A Latin X?
Mixed Media (Acrylic, Spray Paint, Marker, Gel Plate) on Cardstock

2025

"What the Fuck is Latin X?" is an 8.5" x 11" mixed media artwork that confronts the viewer with a direct and unapologetic question. Using spray paint, gel plate transfer, acrylics, and paint markers, the piece begins with a vibrant depiction of a woman dressed for Día de los Muertos, adorned with flowers and skeletal makeup. The background pulses with rich yellows, greens, blues, and pinks, creating an energy that celebrates cultural vibrancy and heritage. However, a bold diagonal slash of black paint obscures her face, stripping away her identity and reducing her to something undefined—an erasure that mirrors the frustration embedded in the work’s central message.

Across this deliberate act of concealment, the phrase "What the fuck is Latin X?" is scrawled in bright white paint marker, demanding attention and conversation. The piece questions America’s tendency to homogenize diverse cultures under broad, ill-fitting labels, often reducing the unique histories and traditions of entire nations to a singular, imposed identity. It challenges viewers to reconsider the ways language and classification can be tools of both inclusion and division. At its core, this artwork is not just about a label—it’s about identity, autonomy, and the insistence that people define themselves rather than being defined by others.
