More Word on the Street
"Don't Drink and Dial" is my latest creation and part of my ongoing series "Word on the Street." This series has been close to my heart for years as it allows me to transform recycled cardboard and discarded packaging into colorful, abstract works layered with words, quotes, and advice. These pieces are meant to live out in the world, not hidden away, but waiting to be discovered in unexpected places. I have left them on the streets of Philadelphia, at rodeos in Wyoming, and in countless corners of Miami from local bars to quiet book clubs. Each work is a small offering to spark reflection, laughter, or inspiration in someone’s daily life.
This particular piece was created on the back of an Elysian Beer box that I recycled into a canvas. I began with a grunge background in pastel teal and yellow, building up layers of texture that give the work its energy and depth. Across the center, I scrawled two deep blue scribbled fields where the words "Do not drink and dial" are boldly written. It is a simple but sage reminder in our modern era, one that carries both humor and truth. Between the two blue spaces, almost hidden, are words written faintly in light pink marker: "Go On and Be Free." These words, softly tucked into the background, hold a quieter message about letting go, about releasing yourself from what no longer serves you.
For me, this piece is not only a playful caution but also an invitation. It reminds us that even in our missteps, there is room to laugh, reflect, and move forward lighter than before. By creating these works on recycled materials, I also continue my effort to keep waste out of landfills and turn the discarded into something that carries meaning. My hope is always that when someone finds this piece, they pause for a moment, take in its message, and carry a little of its spirit with them.
