The Inside Joke
This latest piece, The Narcissistic Selfie, is part of my yearly tradition of creating art that bridges the playful spirit of Halloween with darker themes that speak to our times. Using the gel plate method with acrylics and inks, I wanted to capture the glossy, over saturated feel of social media culture while pulling the mask off to reveal the emptiness underneath. The skeleton of the woman is not just a character but a mirror, reflecting the way we often prioritize appearances over authenticity, carefully curating how we want to be seen while losing touch with the core of who we really are.
In vibrant yellows and aqua tones, I deliberately leaned into the sugary and bright aesthetic of online spaces. These colors are inviting, they are meant to draw you in just like a perfect feed or flawless photo might. Yet behind the surface lies the hollow structure, a commentary on the hollowness of the performance itself. In many ways this work is an inside joke, for those who understand the satire, but it is also a quiet critique of how far we have drifted from meaningful human interaction. Where we once found connection through eye contact and shared experiences, we now find ourselves locked into glowing screens that promise connection but deliver disconnection.
This painting is both humorous and haunting, a playful jab and a serious observation. It asks us to reflect on whether the world we build through digital portrayals is worth the trade of losing genuine moments and true connection.
