This is my latest artwork, Black Ace, painted with acrylics and inks on a page that was originally destined to be discarded. When I create gel plates, I often end up with a black sheet of paper left behind from pulling the prints, and normally these go unused. But on this one, I could see the image of Ace emerge despite the entire page being covered in black. It felt as though the figure revealed itself through the darkness, waiting for me to recognize it. I set it aside for a while, unsure of what path to take, until inspiration struck.
The breakthrough came when I came across a quote by Charles Dickens, “She was more than human to me.” It resonated so strongly with what I was seeing on the page and with what I was feeling that I knew it belonged within the piece. I chose to inscribe the words in gold, one of the most precious elements on Earth, to reflect the immense value and weight of the time and connection it represented. The dark background became symbolic of everything unspoken, the memories and intricacies that I intentionally chose to leave hidden, open to interpretation and imagination.
Black Ace is both deeply personal and universal. It holds within it the duality of light and darkness, presence and absence, value and loss. The gold words shine against the black, a reminder that even in the darkest spaces something precious can emerge. The piece carries with it both memory and mystery, leaving enough untold for the viewer to engage with their own reflection of what lies in shadow.
