The Venegas Family
The Venegas Family
Acrylic on Cardstock (Gel Plate)
8.5” x 11”
2025

This is my latest painting titled "The Venegas Family," created using a gel plate. It is one of those works that felt both simple in its execution and deeply layered in its meaning. The piece is based on a photograph of my best friend, who has since passed away, and his family. For me, it is a window back to our youth, to a time filled with laughter, music, and the kind of chaos that only comes from being surrounded by people you love. I can still hear the rock music playing, the sound of drums echoing through the house, and the joy of running through the hallways and kitchen. These memories hold both sweetness and weight, a reminder of how fleeting and precious those moments were.

The painting also serves as a testament to the strength and resilience of the women in the Venegas family. They lost a husband and father, a brother and a son, yet they continue to move forward with dignity, kindness, and unbroken hearts. Tragedy can either shatter people or forge them into something stronger, like steel. In their case, I see perseverance and grace, an ability to keep carrying love despite the losses they have endured. This painting honors that strength while preserving the spirit of the family at a time when life was still light and joyful.

Visually, the work is created as a two tone painting, with gold chosen as the contrasting color. Gold represents the golden memories that remain uncorrupted by time and grief, but also the value of family and love, which are more precious than any element on Earth. Just as gold forms the foundation of the world’s economies, these memories and the resilience of this family form a foundation of immeasurable worth. The Venegas family, their laughter, their struggles, and their unshakable perseverance, are gold.
