The Inside Joke
My latest artwork, "A Model Narcissist," is equal parts social commentary incorporated into the ongoing holiday theme and an inside joke for those of you that get it. On the surface, it features a skeleton posing in a fashion shoot set against a palette of autumn colors and wearing a pearl off white shirt that shimmers in the light though it does not translate well when scanned. This is one of several skeletal pieces I am creating for this year’s Halloween season. It plays with the concept of beauty and illusion, using the skeleton as both subject and metaphor to represent the hollow interior hidden beneath the polished exterior. The piece captures that fleeting moment of allure, perfection, and self admiration that dominates so much of modern culture.
Dive past the face value of this artwork, pun intended, and it becomes part of a larger series of paintings titled "The Inside Joke." This collection is a reflection on narcissism and the masks people wear to conceal the emptiness within. How you see people on social media give the appearance of being compassionate and caring, the perfect friend, girlfriend or wife, the perfect father or mother but behind the fascade is a truly selfish, cruel and hurtful person that only cares for themselves as they navigate through life using person after person in an endless pursuit of validation through love bombing, affairs, promiscuity, manipulation and more to feed the ego of a hurt soul often stemming from a childhood wound of neglect and abandonment. “A Model Narcissist” exposes that truth, stripping away the glamour to reveal what lies beneath the mask.
