Mail Art South Florida
My latest artwork, created as part of my ongoing participation in the Mail Art Movement, is titled "Asesino" and is the first in a two part series centered on Fidel Castro. Through my work in the Mail Art Movement, I strive to share elements of our local politics, culture, flora, and fauna, while also reflecting on the issues that shape the South Florida experience. Few figures have left a deeper and more lasting mark on this region than Castro. His dictatorship forced countless Cubans to flee their homeland, scattering families and reshaping communities throughout the world. This piece confronts that legacy directly, using art as both a means of remembrance and a form of protest against the systems of power that continue to oppress.
There remains, unfortunately, a persistent romanticism surrounding Castro in some circles, a dangerous distortion that overlooks the suffering and loss endured by millions. My perspective comes not from myth or politics but from personal history. I have heard the stories of those who endured his prisons and lived through his tyranny, including my own grandfather, who lost everything to that regime. "Asesino" is a declaration against the glorification of such cruelty, a visual statement that bears witness to the truth of those who lived it.
