Mail Art South Florida
My latest artwork, created as part of my continued participation in the Mail Art Movement, is titled "DICKtating Numbers" and forms the second part of my two piece series on Fidel Castro. Through the Mail Art Movement, I strive to share aspects of our local politics, culture, flora, and fauna, offering a window into the South Florida experience and its complex history. Of all the figures who have shaped this region, few have cast a longer or darker shadow than Fidel Castro. His rule forced generations of Cubans to flee their homeland in search of freedom, leaving behind families, homes, and a country forever marked by oppression and loss.
"DICKtating Numbers" confronts that history head on. The numbers displayed across the piece speak volumes: 10,723 estimated deaths under his rule, including 5,600 by firing squad, 1,200 through extrajudicial killings, and a heartbreaking 94 children among the victims. Each figure is a testament to the human cost of tyranny, a stark reminder of the suffering endured by so many. This artwork serves not only as an act of remembrance but as a demand for truth, urging viewers to look beyond the myths and face the reality of the man behind the regime.
