My latest artwork, "El Cuarto De Tula," is equal parts social commentary, woven into the ongoing Halloween and Dia De Los Muertos themes, and an inside joke (for those of you that get it). On the surface, it features a portrait of a skeleton posing with its skeletal puppy. It is part of my larger series of paintings, "The Inside Joke" (you can see the full gallery at elvissantana.com), and serves as an artistic exploration into narcissism. A narcissist can love animals, but their affection is often self-serving, driven by validation, control, or image rather than genuine compassion. They use pets to enhance their appearance of kindness and warmth, projecting an illusion of empathy. Yet, when the pet becomes inconvenient or fails to fulfill their needs, they abandon it without remorse, revealing the emptiness behind the mask of affection.

The title, "El Cuarto De Tula," is a nod to my Cuban roots and the legendary Bene More. The song itself carries a double meaning, exploring a woman’s desire to have her fires put out, which parallels the narcissist’s insatiable need for validation and attention. Their emotional “fires” burn bright with passion and charm when they seek new supply, yet quickly fade to cold detachment once their needs are met. This duality of warmth and emptiness lies at the heart of both the song and the artwork, capturing the haunting beauty of illusion, control, and desire that define the narcissistic cycle.
