“Bourdain” is my latest painting, created as a tribute to the late Anthony Bourdain—an artist of humanity whose curiosity and compassion brought the world closer together. His presence on screen reminded us that food was never just about taste, but about connection, culture, and understanding. In this piece, I wanted to capture both his brilliance and his vulnerability, reflecting the tension between outer exploration and inner struggle. Painted in deep and medium blue tones, the work holds a quiet gravity, with Bourdain himself rendered in silver to create a soft sheen that feels both luminous and distant, as though he exists between memory and light.
Across the painting floats one of his own reflections: “When I die, I will decidedly not be regretting missed opportunities for a good time. My regrets will be more along the lines of a sad list of people hurt, people let down, assets wasted and advantages squandered.” Those words linger heavy in this piece, a meditation on regret, empathy, and the weight of self-awareness. November is Men’s Health Month, and it is a moment to remember that so many men suffer in silence, as Bourdain did. On average, 107 men die by suicide every day in the United States. In 2022, 39,045 men took their own lives—nearly 80 percent of all suicide deaths—despite representing only half the population. If someone you know is struggling, please reach out. This painting is not about loss alone, but about the shared humanity in our struggles. The silver figure stands as both a reflection and a warning—a reminder that brilliance and pain often coexist, and that even the voices who inspire us most can feel unseen. Through this work, I hope to spark dialogue, encourage vulnerability, and honor the lives of those who could not stay. Art can hold space for what words cannot, and in that stillness, perhaps, we find the courage to reach out and keep each other here.
