Fell On Black Days
Fell On Black Days
Acrylic on Cardstock (Gel Plate)
8.5” x 11”
2025

“Fell On Black Days” is my latest painting, created on eight point five by eleven inch cardstock using the gel plate method. This piece serves as a tribute to the late Chris Cornell, whose musical contributions helped define an era. Cornell was a central figure in the nineteen nineties grunge movement, known for his nearly four octave vocal range, his powerful belting technique, and his extensive songwriting history. His solo work included albums such as Euphoria Morning, Carry On, Scream, and Higher Truth, as well as the moving live album Songbook. He earned a Golden Globe nomination for The Keeper and co wrote and performed You Know My Name for the James Bond film Casino Royale. His final solo release was The Promise, written for the film of the same name. His artistry continues to stand as one of the strongest and most unique voices in modern rock.

Cornell struggled with depression for much of his life, and his passing on May eighteen two thousand seventeen remains a devastating reminder of the unseen battles many endure. I wanted this painting not only to honor his legacy, but also to act as a call for awareness surrounding mens mental health and suicide prevention. November is Mens Health Month, a time to acknowledge the truth that many men suffer in silence. In the United States an average of one hundred seven men die by suicide every day. In two thousand twenty two, thirty nine thousand forty five men died by suicide, representing nearly eighty percent of all suicide deaths despite men making up roughly half the population. If you know someone who may be struggling, please speak up, reach out, and offer support. You can call or text nine eight eight, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.

This painting was created to carry both grief and purpose. It reflects Cornell’s haunting emotional depth while also speaking to the need for compassion, understanding, and action. Art can illuminate difficult conversations, and with this piece I hope to shed light on the shadows that too many walk through alone.
