Fantasy, Mythology and Science Fiction
Steampunk in Blue began as an exploration of identity filtered through imagination and invention. I wanted this figure to feel both familiar and otherworldly, suspended between past and future. The oversized glasses act as both armor and lens, suggesting a character who observes more than she reveals, while the pale face and dark surrounding tones create a quiet sense of isolation and focus.
Color plays a central role in shaping the mood of this piece. The deep blues of the lips and eyes push against the warmth of the rusted reds and browns, creating a tension that mirrors the contrast between vulnerability and self possession. Texture is intentionally rough and grainy, allowing imperfections to remain visible and human. These marks slow the viewer down and invite a closer look, much like the figure herself seems to demand.
For me, this painting is about curiosity and introspection in a world built on spectacle. It reflects a fascination with retro futurism while remaining rooted in emotion rather than costume. Steampunk in Blue is less about a genre and more about a state of mind, where invention becomes a way to protect softness and seeing becomes an act of quiet resistance.
