More Abstract
"Levitators" explores the visual tension between weight and weightlessness, grounding and ascension. The title refers directly to the four prominent circular motifs that dominate the composition. I envision these forms not merely as shapes, but as autonomous entities—energies, portals, or stylized oculi—that have detached themselves from the chaotic environment beneath them. They hover in a space that feels simultaneously atmospheric and dense, existing within the turmoil of the background but remaining distinct from it.
The execution of this piece involved an aggressive layering of mixed media to build a sense of history on the canvas. The background is a turbulent landscape of earthy rusts, deep ochres, and washes of teal, applied with energetic brushwork that suggests friction and movement. In contrast, the "levitating" circles were rendered using stencil work and spray paint. This technique creates soft, glowing halos around their sharp graphic interiors, visually pushing them forward and enhancing the illusion of suspension above the textured fray.
Ultimately, this painting is a meditation on finding clarity amidst noise. The gritty, warm tones anchor the piece in a heavy reality, while the cool, bright circles offer a sense of escape or a higher perspective. I want the viewer to feel that distinct upward pull, recognizing that even in the messiest surfaces or situations, there are elements that can rise, maintain their form, and hover above it all.
