City Cellular
City Cellular
Acrylic and Ink on Cardboard

2026

I am excited to share my latest painting titled City Cellular which I created on the unconventional surface of a deconstructed Nike cardboard box. This piece is a direct exploration of the relationship between organic life and urban structure. I was fascinated by the idea of microscopic cells floating against the rigid grid of a city map, and the cardboard provided the perfect raw texture to ground this concept in a tactile reality.

The process involved layering paints to build up the background which features a distinct grid pattern reminiscent of city streets or circuit boards. Over this structured base I painted freeform cell like shapes outlined in a vibrant green with bright yellow centers, giving them a sense of energy and life. The warm browns and deep reds of the background contrast with the pops of white and green, creating a dynamic interplay between the different elements and highlighting the textures of the cardboard itself.

City Cellular is a reflection on how individual lives and biological processes intersect with the man made environments we inhabit. The organic forms of the cells seem to both exist within and float above the structured urban landscape, suggesting a complex coexistence. By using recycled materials like the Nike box I hope to also draw attention to the beauty that can be found in everyday discarded objects and the potential for transformation through art.
