Mail Art South Florida
“The Don” continues my ongoing participation in the global exchange known as the Mail Art Movement. Through this practice I send small pieces of South Florida out into the world, sharing the culture, characters, and stories that make this place so vibrant and unique. Each piece becomes a kind of postcard from home, a visual note that carries the spirit of the region beyond its borders. In a place where sports, music, language, and heritage blend into a singular identity, the people who shape our local mythology become natural subjects for these traveling works.
At the center of this painting is Don Shula, the legendary head coach of the Miami Dolphins and one of the defining figures in South Florida sports history. His leadership guided the Dolphins through their historic perfect season and secured his place as one of the most respected coaches in professional football. For many people in this region, Shula represents discipline, pride, and the rise of Miami as a serious football city. His presence still echoes through stadium memories, family traditions on game day, and the enduring loyalty of generations of fans.
The painting itself presents Shula in a direct and unflinching portrait, rendered with strong contrast and bold color. The fiery red background frames his familiar expression and dark sunglasses, while the deep teal jacket bearing the Dolphins emblem anchors him firmly in the identity of the team he led for decades. The texture of the surface gives the portrait a worn and almost archival quality, as though the image has been carried through time like a treasured sports relic. The result is both tribute and cultural snapshot, capturing the quiet authority of a man who helped define an era of South Florida.
