More Abstract
"A Main Caterpillar" is an exploration of organic movement and structural contrast, where I have leaned into a more fluid and intuitive process of creation. The title, much like the composition itself, carries an abstract quality that I have embraced by allowing my children to name my recent works, letting their unfiltered imagination provide a new layer of meaning. The piece centers on a bold, curving form that sweeps across the canvas in vibrant shades of teal and deep obsidian, suggesting the life and momentum of a natural creature without being bound by literal representation. Set against a weathered background of warm ochre and distressed neutrals, the work creates a dialogue between the solidity of the earth and the shifting, ephemeral nature of living things.
In developing this painting, I utilized a mix of gestural brushwork and tactile texture to give the abstract forms a physical presence that feels both ancient and contemporary. The interplay of bright orange splatters and fine white lines adds a rhythmic energy to the piece, as if capturing a moment of transformation or growth within a hidden ecosystem. By working on a raw substrate, I am able to incorporate the grit and history of the material into the final narrative, allowing the natural imperfections to guide the flow of the paint. This work is a celebration of spontaneity and the joy of seeing the world through a perspective that is not limited by traditional boundaries, resulting in a visual experience that is as unpredictable as the title suggests.
