Into the Wild
This sunflower painting was created with acrylic and sharpie on paper, and while it carries imperfections, I believe those qualities give it honesty. The central image is a drying sunflower, something I found both striking and deeply moving. Set against a mustard brown background, the flower holds its own as a figure of quiet resilience, its fading form still full of presence. Yellow clouds, painted with loose brushstrokes, blur into the scene, offering an atmosphere that feels both fragile and expansive. For me, the imperfections became part of the meaning, allowing the work to mirror the way beauty persists even as things fade.
While painting, I found myself reflecting on the struggles farmers endure during droughts across America, where keeping a crop alive can become a daily battle. This sunflower became a stand in for that perseverance, for the strength it takes to nurture life against all odds. It is also a meditation on the fragile beauty of nature, how easily it can be overlooked, and how vital it is to appreciate it while it endures. My hope is that this piece reminds viewers not only of the sunflower’s quiet strength but also of the unseen efforts of those who fight to keep such beauty alive.
